Jun Matsui: A Fusion of East and West

Born in Recife-PE, Brazil in 1972, Jun Matsui's artistic journey began in Tokyo in 1993. He became a pioneer in Japan, dedicating himself to the bold art of ethnic tribal tattoos, characterized by sweeping black ink that adorns the body.
Jun Matsui is a master of freehand tattooing, where designs are created directly on the skin, seamlessly integrating with the client's anatomy.

This unique approach draws inspiration from his two greatest influences: the intricate traditions of Japanese Irezumi and the powerful Maori tribal graphics of New Zealand.

For the first 15 years of his career in Tokyo, Jun Matsui honed his craft alongside legendary Japanese tattoo artists like Horiyoshi III, Horiwaka, Horitaku, and Horicho. These masters instilled in him a deep appreciation for the cultural, social, spiritual, and artistic significance of tattooing.

Jun Matsui's life and work bridge the gap between ancient and modern, East and West. He seeks to capture the mystical, the beautiful, and the timeless in every piece. His dedication and distinctive style have garnered international recognition, influencing tattoo artists across generations.

The originality and versatility of Jun Matsui's work have extended beyond the tattoo studio. His captivating designs have graced collaborations with renowned brands like Shiseido, Honda, Square Enix (Final Fantasy VII), Vogue Japan, Nike, OÜS (Grendene), DITA Eyewear, and Rolling Stone Magazine.

From 1997 to 2006, Jun Matsui ran his own clothing line in Tokyo's Harajuku district, a global center for street style. Even today, Jun Matsui Studio continues to offer limited-edition clothing and accessories.

In 2005, Japan saw the release of "Hari," the first book dedicated to Jun Matsui's artwork. A decade later, director André Ferezini brought Jun Matsui's story to life in a documentary screened in Tokyo, London, NYC, San Francisco, and São Paulo.

These days, Jun Matsui calls the historic city of São Luís do Paraitinga home.
There, he keeps busy tattooing clients and developing educational programs.
These programs share his experience and knowledge, aiming to help train the next generation of tattoo artists.
